There can be some differences in this respect as well. Finally, the choice of operating system determines which programmes you can use on the device. Since the appearance of this server operating system, Microsoft has repeatedly developed new versions, which the developers have adapted to the current state of technology. The latest version is Windows Server 2019, which was released in October 2018. In the meantime, however, Microsoft has already announced the successor version: Windows Server 2022, which is supposed to bring some new practical functions, improve security and is also designed for the use of more extensive hardware.
Benefit from many practical functions
The Windows Server 2022 offers several practical new functions compared to the previous version. These facilitate server management and cooperation with Microsoft's cloud services.
Of great importance here is Azure Arc. This application allows you to connect the cloud services of Azure with your own company server. The control takes place quickly and easily via Azure. This allows you to organise your IT infrastructure efficiently.
The Storage Migration Service also receives better support on Windows Server 2022 than before. This application is used to transfer content from your in-house file server to the Azure cloud quickly and easily. This allows you to use the cloud services even more efficiently.
In addition, Microsoft has revised the Windows Admin Center. One of the most important innovations is that you can now manage your virtual machines much better. For example, you can insert your applications into a container and then transfer them to the cloud.
New version with focus on safety
However, the main focus in designing the new version was clearly on increasing security. Cyber-attacks are taking place more and more frequently and result in considerable losses for many companies. Microsoft has reacted to this problem and equipped the new version of the server software with a significantly improved protection system.At the centre of this is the so-called Secure Core Server. This is based in certain areas on Windows Defender, which many users probably already know from the Windows 10 PC operating system. However, Microsoft has adapted its functions to the special requirements of a server. It provides good protection against viruses and other malware. However, the Secure-core Server goes one step further. It separates the operating system from the hardware via a so-called multi-layer protection system. This protects the server in particular from attacks that exploit the vulnerabilities of the firmware used.
Another protection system is called Secure Connectivity. This increases the security when using the network. This ensures that the transmission of data is more secure. For example, this system supports the secure transmission protocols HTTPS and TLS 1.3 as standard.
In addition, there are many other functions that increase security. For example, there is increased protection against the execution of unverified code. The system also offers a particularly high level of security for data concerning the identities of users. Finally, additional protection is integrated in the event of physical access to the system. All these details ensure that Windows Server 2022 makes it much easier for you to fend off attacks at different levels.
Extended support for extensive hardware
The operating system is responsible for controlling the hardware. However, it does not support unlimited equipment. That is not technically possible. Therefore, it must always set a limit. However, since the hardware becomes more and more powerful over time, it is common to extend these limits with each new version. This is also the case with Windows Server 2022.
Of particular importance here is the limitation on RAM. The previous version, Windows Server 2019, supported up to 24 TB. However, the new version will increase this value to up to 48 TB. Therefore, you can operate a significantly more powerful server with it.
In addition, there are enhancements in other areas. For example, if you create a virtual machine, it should not only be able to use a larger working memory, but also more virtual CPUs than before. In summary, it can be said that you can operate significantly more powerful systems with Windows Server 2022.
The editions for Windows Server 2022
The Windows Server is always delivered in different editions. These are aimed at businesses with different needs. In the last version, for example, the Essentials, Standard and Datacenter editions were available.
The Essentials edition is mainly aimed at smaller companies. It is approved for use by up to 25 different users or 50 different devices. The licences are already included in the purchase of the server software. However, it is not possible to extend this number of users. The price for the Essentials edition is significantly lower than for the other two options.
The Standard and Datacenter editions have many things in common. Both are intended for an unlimited number of users. They are therefore best suited for medium-sized and large businesses. However, you must bear in mind that you have to license each user individually. The range of functions in these two editions is somewhat larger than in the Essentials version. The main difference between them is the number of virtual machines available. While this is limited to 2 in the Standard edition, there are no restrictions in this respect in the Datacenter edition.
This description indicates which editions were available for the last versions of the Windows Server. However, Microsoft has not yet given any information about the planned editions for Windows Server 2022. Nevertheless, a look at the already published test versions allows an assessment. Here you can download either the standard or the data centre edition. It can therefore be assumed that at least these two versions will be available. However, it is not yet known whether there will be an Essentials Edition again.
